What is a DMZ?

A DMZ is a separate network that acts as a buffer or firewall system. A so-called DMZ ensures increased cybersecurity.

What is a DMZ and how does it work? To begin with, the abbreviation stands for 'Demilitarized Zone.' It is used to create a separate network that acts as a buffer or firewall system between a company network and the public internet. A DMZ is intended to increase the security of a company network by isolating it from possible online threats.

How does a DMZ work?

A DMZ houses computers or servers that companies want to make accessible to external access, such as a web server or a mail server. These computers are equipped with a special firewall that only allows certain types of traffic. All other traffic that isn't permitted is blocked.

The firewall used in a Demilitarized Zone must be configured to block traffic from the company network. This makes the network more secure by preventing external users from gaining access to internal systems.

When do you deploy a Demilitarized Zone?

If a company wants to make certain servers accessible to external access while also preventing external users from gaining access to internal systems, a Demilitarized Zone is a good solution. By applying the firewall at the DMZ, companies can increase the security of their company network.

A Demilitarized Zone can also be used to make a network more accessible to external users. For example, if a company wants to offer a secure VPN connection to external users, the DMZ can secure this connection.

Increasing cybersecurity through a DMZ

A Demilitarized Zone is one of the most important tools companies can use to secure their company network against external threats. It's a flexible solution that allows companies to better secure their external access against external threats, without limiting access to the internal network.
