2FA: What is it and why is it important?

Two-factor authentication is a good cyber security measure to secure your accounts. It reduces the risk of getting hacked!

2FA, also known as two-factor authentication, is a way to secure your online accounts against cyberattacks. It's a widely used method to protect accounts from unwanted access. 2FA increases account security by combining two separate steps needed to gain access to your account.

What is two-factor authentication?

2FA uses two different factors to grant access. The first factor is a form of recognition, such as a username and password. The second factor is a way to confirm the user's identity, such as a unique code sent via SMS or email.

There are many different types of 2FA. The most common is SMS verification, where a unique code is sent to a mobile phone, which the user can use to confirm they are trying to log in.

How does two-step verification work?

Two-factor authentication can work in several ways. Below we list a few options that are commonly used:

  • Email verification, often in the form of a code

  • Authenticator apps, where you can, for example, log in and need to generate or confirm a code

  • Physical tokens, where a new token is generated every so many seconds/minutes

  • Biometric verification, involving a fingerprint, iris scan, or facial scan

Above we've listed a few examples of two-step verification. Parties that offer login functionality often have an option for users to activate this. As a specialist in ethical hacking and pentesting, Tozetta advises always activating this. Why two-step verification is important? We'll explain below.

Why is two-factor authentication important?

2FA is an important part of a security strategy. It makes it harder for unauthorized individuals to gain access to your accounts. It also increases the reliability of accounts, since more steps are required to gain access.

If you want to better secure your accounts, two-step verification is highly recommended. It's an effective way to strengthen the security of your accounts and reduce the risk of a hack. It's also a relatively simple way to protect accounts against cyberattacks. Within your account settings, you can often activate this within just a few clicks.
